Similar “collecting” efforts are popping up across the country. It has been fascinating to see the creativity of news organizations, history organizations, libraries and other groups as they develop new ways to both document the pandemic and the unprecedented circumstances, as well as connect communities that are physically separated.

Demesne Architecture & Interior Design -How to Create a Refuge in the Home
Designing your home as a sanctuary is more important now than ever. Everyone is looking for simplicity and support right now, as well how to prepare spaces for the ‘new normal.’ Demesne architects Managing Partner Richard Mullen is the source for home trends and ways to create calm design in the home.
Design After Quarantine: What changes will have the greatest impact on our cities? The 20th century impacted the way we lived and designed our cities, accommodating the suburbs, cars and the atomic family. The pandemic and remote work could have substantial effects on how we live, design our cities, and how we interact with one another.
- Residential designers in rural areas are in demand as people flee cities and commercial spaces close as employees work remotely.
- Building or remodeling within the envelope of the home to mentally separate and create spaces that allow them to separate lines blurred between work/home.
- All these changes are driving us toward more remote/cost-effective towns and the need for open spaces in urban areas = what can we do as architects and designers?
- How do we make cities that allow us to congregate and actually feel like it’s meant to be there that people buy into?
Architectural Thoughts During the Pandemic:
- Home As A Sanctuary & Refuge: Despite the amount of space in your home, people typically spend most of their time in a few spaces that occupy about 200 square feet of the home. These are the most used ‘vignettes’ and specific-use ‘comfort’ area.
- Thoughtful Design Replaces Square Footage = Land costs + people being more aware of the environment. More is spent per square foot, but with thoughtful design in a space that is slightly smaller.
- Outdoor Spaces- When the weather is nice, the interplay between interior and exterior spaces increases. including gardens, patios, courtyards, decks, and visual space provided by windows and landscaping.
- Reducing Tech to Create a Sanctuary in the House – Architectural technology will evolve into a home as a “studio” for video conference and phone calls with backdrops and lighting playing a part.
Demesne Architects – With offices in Dallas and Aspen, Demesne has designed boutique hospitality and luxury residential architecture and interiors for over 15 years. demesne.design | Learn more about Demesne Design.

Aspen Center for Environmental Studies
BioBlitz Book Launch
What species are in your backyard? Are you aware of them? Are you protecting them? These are some of the questions that Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES) hopes you will think about when you read The Hidden Life Around Us. This impactful and beautiful coffee-table book showcases the species of Aspen with stunning photographs and thoughtful text.
- This book grew out of a BioBlitz to survey the species at Hallam Lake Nature Preserve, ACES’s campus in the heart of Aspen. On this twenty-five-acre tract of wetland with a five-acre lake, 422 species have been identified. Eighty-one of those species are showcased in the book through striking color photographs and brief, fascinating descriptions.
- With original and artful photography and illustrations, the text includes a foreword by Bruce Finley, environmental writer for The Denver Post and an essay by acclaimed NatGeo nature photographer and filmmaker Pete McBride as well as essays by ACES’ Adam McCurdy and Chris Lane, this is beyond just a book – this is a project that has potential to bring our community together through interactive nature education.
- HOLIDAY GIFTS/BUY LOCALLY: Book Link: ACES Hidden Life Around Us
WHY IS THIS BOOK IMPORTANT NOW?
AS A SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATION TOOL: With communication and education almost completely virtual and digital right now, this book is a hands-on, interactive educational tool that will help children, families, individuals, second home owners and tourists learn and explore the biodiversity of our surrounding area in a highly tactile manner.
GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE: This book explains the importance of biodiversity locally and globally. “In order to stave off the mass extinction of species, including our own, we must move swiftly to preserve the biodiversity of our planet,” says Edward O. Wilson in his most impassioned book to date.
NATURE AS SALVE: We are so lucky to be connected to this special Valley. Nature has been and will hopefully continue to be a salve for mental and physical health during uncertain times like the pandemic.
